Associate University Librarian for Research and Learning

The University Library System at the University of Pittsburgh seeks an imaginative, innovative, flexible, forward-looking, and collaborative individual to serve as the Associate University Librarian for Research and Learning. The incumbent provides strategic direction, leadership, and coordination in developing, assessing and sustaining the Library’s services and spaces to support and partner in teaching, research and scholarship activities of the University’s faculty, students, and staff.

This senior position provides strategic oversight and inspirational leadership for the following departments and units: Hillman Library (liaison program, Research and Educational Support unit, Interlibrary Loan, Collection Maintenance); Oakland campus departmental libraries including Finney Music, Frick Fine Arts, Bevier Engineering, Chemistry, and Langley (Biology and Neuroscience); and the University of Pittsburgh’s four regional campus libraries (Greensburg, Johnstown, Titusville, and Bradford). The AUL collaboratively establishes goals and objectives for the division, which encompasses approximately 28 faculty librarians and 49 staff employees, and leads the organization to continually identify, implement and assess user-centered services that effectively engage with the research, teaching and learning activities of our faculty and students. The incumbent will foster a culture that encourages and awards innovation, collaboration, and inclusion.

Reporting directly to the Hillman University Librarian and a member of the Library Management Team, the AUL will actively engage in all aspects of the ULS, including serving as an ambassador and advocate for libraries to campus constituencies and regional and national organizations, and participating in the Library’s efforts to secure external funding for materials and services.

Librarians at the University of Pittsburgh are members of the faculty and are expected to demonstrate continuous professional development in addition to performing their specific responsibilities. This expectation includes such activities as participating in and contributing to departmental, library and campus-wide committees or working groups, as well as the profession at a regional, national, and/or international level; maintaining a broad awareness of current and emerging issues that affect their particular areas of expertise; participating in relevant publishing and presentation opportunities; and pursuing knowledge of professional trends and developments that can be applied to evolving research, services and collections. 

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or higher in library or information science; or other relevant discipline
  • Additional advanced degree desired
  • Minimum five years of increasingly responsible, relevant professional experience in an academic research library, with a particular expertise in the design, evaluation and delivery of user-centered services
  • Progressively responsible management and supervisory experience in an academic research library or in comparable higher education environment
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, including keen analytical and conceptual abilities
  • Strong interpersonal and public communication skills, including the ability to serve as an advocate and spokesperson
  • Experience with assessment of services
  • Ability to lead organizational change, inspire innovation, build collaboration, delegate responsibilities appropriately, and develop staff
  • Knowledge of emerging trends in higher education
  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive, diverse work environment and transparency in decision-making
  • Strong publication and presentation record, as well as a record of professional engagement that will allow for the appointment at Librarian III or Librarian IV level
