Large-scale Library Instruction in 50 Minutes or Less. Poster session presented with Marian Hampton at the Library Orientation Exchange (LOEX) Annual Conference, Ypsilanti, MI, May 19-20, 2000.

Abstract: The main campus of the University of Pittsburgh, an urban research university situated in Western Pennsylvania, serves over 22,000 graduate and undergraduate students and 3,400 research faculty. For the last seven years, the University Library System has worked with the College of Arts and Sciences to provide course-integrated library instruction to over 1700 CAS freshmen each scholastic year through the Freshman Studies Program. This poster session presents the planning and logistics involved in a large-scale instruction effort, the Freshman Studies hands-on library instruction session presenting PITTCat (the University Library System's online catalog) and selected online indexes, the use of a Web-based Freshman Studies Quiz, and a final student evaluation of the library instruction session.

  • Chaired the following three sessions at the ARLIS/NA Pittsburgh conference:
    1) Opening Plenary Session: "Pittsburgh Art and Architecture" that featured two Pittsburgh speakers: Mr. Michael Eversmeyer, Pittsburgh architect (AIA) on "Pittsburgh Architecture" and Dr. Barbara L. Jones, Director of the Westmoreland Museum of American Art on "A Valley of Work: Scenes of Industry" to a standing room only audience;
    2) Panel Session 1 - "Fashioning a New World: the Kaufmann - Wright Collaboration in Pittsburgh" with three outside speakers: Dr. Richard Cleary (Professor, University of Texas and author of _Merchant Prince and Master Builder: Edgar J. Kaufmann and Frank Lloyd Wright (1999), Dr. Norman R. Weiss (Professor, Columbia University) and Mr. Stephen E. Gottlieb (Columbia University). The latter two speakers gave a joint paper entitled "Waterproofing Fallingwater: Preservation Challenges for the New Century." They are both on the preservation team at Fallingwater.
    3) Session 10 - "Wrought of Steel and Philanthropy: The Forging of Andrew Carnegie's Cultural Legacy" with Robert Gangewere (editor of _Carnegie Magazine_), Dr. Abigail Van Slyck (Connecticut College and author of _Free to All: Carnegie Libraries and American Culture (1995), and Dr. Kenneth Neal (Pittsburgh art historian and author of A Wise Extravagance: A History of the Carnegie International Exhibitions, 1896-1901 (1996).

  • Co-Chaired the Gay and Lesbian Caucus, an Affiliated Society of the College Art Association, New York, 1999-2000.

  • Chair of the ASS/CEAL Committee on Japanese Materials. Planned, organized and conducted the Committee meeting and mini-seminar on image/graphic databases. The International Research Center for Japanese Studies (Nichibunken) in Kyoto and the National Diet Library gave presentations. The Committee session report was submitted to the Journal of East Asian Libraries (JEAL) for publication, and is available on the Committee Web page at http://www.pitt.edu/~snoguchi/cjmw/home.htm.

    Abstract: Virginia Mae Lacy Jones (1912-1984), whose name is synonymous with African American librarianship throughout the world, was an extraordinary library educator and leader in the profession. This poster session displays the characteristics, attributes, and accomplishments of an exceptional leader who overcame adversity to become the second African American to receive a doctoral degree in Library Science in 1945. Her leadership skills are demonstrated via her many honors and professional position throughout her career. The impact of many African Americans has not been properly documented in the history of librarianship. This historical display of her life is a testament to her enduring legacy.
