Kate Colligan, Associate Archivist, Archives Service Center

Elizabeth Yakel and Catherine Colligan, "Public Library Records:
Accountability and Access Issues"  Public Library Quarterly, 19(4).

Absract: Twenty-six public libraries participated in a survey of their recordkeeping practices.  The authors found a wide variety of paper and electronic records are being maintained.  However, libraries reported few policies governing records management or access to records.  Librarians responding to the survey indicated an overall lack of knowledge concerning policies and records-related legislation, such as the Right-to-Know legislation that is increasingly being used by citizens to request public library records. These findings indicate that public libraries need to better understand good recordkeeping practices.
