Position: We are seeking a motivated MLIS graduate student to work between 10-15 hours a week assisting with library technology projects and endeavors. The incumbent will work in two ULS departments: The Information Systems Department, and with Web Services.

The schedule is set based on the needs of the departments and the incumbents’ availability.

Interested students should have some experience with technology, be self-starters, eager learners, and have an interest in learning more about technology in a library environment.

Web Services: the incumbent may perform a variety of tasks including working with HTML and CSS, and creating new and updating current web pages using industry standard software such as Dreamweaver, Contribute, and Captivate from Adobe. Additional tasks might include working to brand and customize commercial database interfaces, inputting data into the library's electronic resource management software, as assisting with the assessment of library electronic tools using standard usability metrics. Students could work M-F, between 8 am and 4pm.

Department of Information Systems: the incumbent may assist with a number of electronic publishing projects, including electronic theses and dissertations, electronic journals, institutional repositories, and other archives of other scholarly documents. Duties may include metadata entry, software application administration tasks, programming, design & implementation of Web-based user interfaces, and installation, inventory and maintenance of server hardware in the ULS data center. Note that Web services in located in Hillman Library and the Information Systems Department is located at the Library Resource Facility (LRF) located in Point Breeze. Free shuttle transportation between Hillman and the LRF is available.

This position requires working at the ULS Library Resource Facility in Point Breeze (a FREE Shuttle is available between Hillman Library and Thomas Blvd.) as well as problem resolution on the Oakland campus. Must work shifts of no less than 4 consecutive hours NOT including travel time. The duties of this position(s) may include, but are not limited to:

  • PC hardware and software installation and configuration
  • Data entry in various applications
  • End-user training (minimal)
  • Documentation development
  • PC hardware and software troubleshooting
  • Computer hardware and software inventory
  • Database development/maintenance

This position is an excellent opportunity for hands on experience for those looking for a future in Computer Science or Information Science related field.
