Use of the University Library System Libraries by Non-University of Pittsburgh Patrons
The University Library System (ULS) supports the instructional, research and information needs of the University of Pittsburgh. Library collections and resources are purchased and/or licensed solely for the use of University faculty, staff, and students. Use of electronic resources including indexes, journals, and other full text databases is restricted to University faculty, staff, and students. Librarians will assist non- University of Pittsburgh patrons to the extent that appropriate use of collections and resources allows, while giving priority to the University community. Non University of Pittsburgh Patrons
Non University of Pittsburgh patrons include students and faculty from other institutions, local residents, and alumni.
Access and Borrowing Priviliges
The libraries' print collections are accesible for use by non-University of Pittsburgh patrons. Material must be used within the libraries. Patrons interested in borrowing materials may obtain a Special Borrower's card. Special Borrower's Cards are either issued to individuals affiliated with institutions participating in a Reciprocal Borrowing Agreement with the University Library System, or they may be purchased.
Requests From Other Libraries Services are available for a fee to patrons with Special Borrower's Cards. Non University patrons may request University Library System materials through the Requests From Other Libraries office of their home institutions.
Access to Electronic Resources
Due to licensing agreements, non University patrons have limited access to the libraries' electronic resources. Non University patrons are welcome to use PITTCat+, the online library catalog of the libraries of the University of Pittsburgh and government web sites, but cannot access licensed electronic indexes, databases, or journals. Access to the Internet is restricted to government and University of Pittsburgh web sites.
A Special Borrower's Card does not entitle one to access licensed electronic resources.
Questions regarding the use of the University of Pittsburgh libraries may be directed to the Hillman Library Reference/Information Desk at (412) 648-3330.
