There will be an opening reception on Sunday, 1 August 2004 beginning at 6 pm in the evening. Therefore, it would be best if you could arrange to fly into Pittsburgh on the morning or early afternoon of 1 August 2004.

The final closing reception will be held on Friday, 13 August 2004 from 6-9 pm. We will have rooms available for participants until Saturday 14 August in the morning. It is probably best to make your return flight for sometime on Saturday 14 August.

Travel Options TOP^

Flight arrangements will be done by the University Travel Services in Pittsburgh. Please do not simply book the flight on your own! We will then be unable to reimburse you.

Please call Joanne (University Travel Services) at (412) 621.3492 or (800) 245.6203 for arrangements. You can also reach her by email at: joann@uts.sabre.net; Tell her that you are a participant of the Luce Summer Institute, and she will be able to help you make flight reservations.

Note: Sorry, we will be unable to pay for changes to your flights once you make the reservation.

Daily Schedule TOP^

Meet at 272 Hillman Library (on the same floor as the East Asian Library) around 8 am. Tea and coffee will be served.

The Shadyside Inn will provide a free shuttle bus service to the University, but it is also possible to take a city bus (71D or 500) or walk. In good weather, it will take between 20-30 minutes to walk to the University.

Class sessions will be held daily from 8:30-11:30, with a break around 10 am for tea. Daily sessions will be held either in 272 Hillman, G-20 Hillman or at the computer classroom. We will be sure to give you updated information after you arrive in Pittsburgh.

There will be a break for lunch from 11:30- 1 pm every day. We have included some information about options for eating. It will be possible to bring food with you to the University or to walk/take the bus back to the hotel for food preparations in the kitchen there. Meals are not provided by the Institute.

The afternoon session will be held daily from 1 – 4 pm, with a break typically around 2:30 pm.

After 4 pm, there will be time to work on individual projects, take a walk in a nearby park, or work on study/discussions with other participants. The evenings will also be mostly unstructured time.

Housing Arrangements TOP^

We have made reservations for participants and faculty from China at the Shadyside Inn. The Inn is located in a premier residential district with convenient access to the University of Pittsburgh. We have reserved double suites for Institute participants. These suites include a kitchenette complete with refrigerator, stove, microwave and dishes. Towels and sheets are also included.

The rooms are double occupancy, and we will therefore have to place people together. We will hand out room keys and room assignments once you arrive in Pittsburgh on 1 August 2004.

Each room also includes a separate line telephone where people can reach you, as well as unlimited local calls. We must ask you to please not make any long distance calls from these phones.

(1)Gateway Clipper Cruise hosted by the University Library System, University of Pittsburgh.

A cruise on a riverboat will be held on Tuesday 10 August 2004 in the evening. Boarding begins at 6:30, and the boat will sail from 7-9 pm. The cruise will include a chicken and ribs dinner buffet and will show off Pittsburgh’s skyline.

(2) Visit to Frank Lloyd Wright’s Falling Water on Saturday 7 August 2004

Due to difficulties with arranging a trip to OCLC on a weekend (the only time available for such a trip), we have decided to spend a day exploring the Laurel Highlands area of Western Pennsylvania, including a tour of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Falling Water. This unique architectural structure has been hailed by critics the world over. For more information, please see: http://www.wpconline.org/fallingwaterhome.htm

Getting Around Pittsburgh TOP^
From the Airport to the Hotels :

You have the option of either taking a taxi or the bus to Oakland.

By bus, follow the signs for “Buses” at the Pittsburgh International Airport and get on the 28X. It will cost you $2, and takes about 45 minutes to get to Oakland. If you are going to the Shadyside Inn, buy a transfer for an additional $0.25

If you are going to the Holiday Inn, get off the 28X at Bellefield Avenue and Fifth Avenue. Cross Fifth Avenue and turn left. Walk down (towards the Cathedral of Learning) about 2 blocks until you see Tennyson St. The Holiday Inn is off Tennyson St., about a half block up.

If you are going to the Shadyside Inn, get off the 28X at Neville Street. Wait at this stop (on the same side of the street) for a 500 or 71D. Take this about one mile until the stop at South Aiken Avenue. Get off, cross Fifth Avenue, and you will see the Shadyside Inn on the right side of the street.

A taxi will cost you approximately $40 from the airport to either of these places.

From Shadyside Inn to the University of Pittsburgh:
(for participants and Chinese faculty):

It is a simple walk or bus ride down Fifth Avenue from the Shadyside Inn to the University of Pittsburgh.

With the bus, take any 500, 71D or 74B bus that comes on the same side of the street as your rooms in the Shadyside Inn. The bus stop to get off is Fifth Avenue and Bigelow Boulevard. The bus announces that it is “Pitt” and many others will be exiting with you too. Get off the bus, and cross Fifth Avenue (towards the William Pitt Union). Follow Bigelow Blvd. one block and cross at the light at Forbes Avenue. Hillman Library will be on your right.

If you are walking, simply follow Fifth Avenue down past Morewood Ave., Neville St., Bellefield Ave., and past the Cathedral of Learning until you reach Bigelow Blvd. Turn left onto Bigelow Blvd., and follow it one block. Cross at the light at Forbes Avenue and Hillman Library will be on your right.

Please see the maps that were sent out as part of the Information packet in March.

Other Activities in Pittsburgh TOP^

Pittsburgh has undergone a renaissance in the past twenty years. Old unused steel mills have given way to high technology business parks and waterfront retail malls. With the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University as major draws for top talent, Pittsburgh has emerged as a key research center in biotechnology, robotics, and medicine.

Pittsburgh is equally at home with its industrial past as its high-tech future, and this diversity is reflected in the city's different neighborhoods. University of Pittsburgh's website has descriptions and links for arts and entertainment, sports and recreation, and city living. Take some time to explore the city's many facets!
