17) Among the numerous pieces of original art work contributed by Virginia Chase is a woodcut by Lynd Ward from Johnny Tremain, a novel about the Revolutionary War, from which Miss Nesbitt loved to quote the words of the patriot James Otis: "We give all we have, lives, property, safety, skills...we fight, we die for a simple thing. Only that a man can stand up." Johnny Tremain won the Newbery Award in 1944.
