| The Elizabeth Nesbitt Room Nineteenth Century Juvenile Magazine Collection contains more than 85 titles published in England and America between 1802 and 1943. This is a representative collection of popular magazines children read for pleasure,
religious instruction, and educational purposes. Magazines for children were a fairly new development in 1802, the year of the earliest publication we hold in this collection. A quick glance at a sample such as The Juvenile Magazine, or Miscellaneous Repository of Useful Information (1802) immediately shows the educational intent of the editor for this magazine. Editorial intent is also obvious in the examination of a title from later in the century, ones such as Wide Awake (1872) or St. Nicholas (1873-1943). There are distinct changes in the quality of the literature, the content of the non-fiction offerings, and the detail of the illustrations selected for use in the titles. The text included in these magazines was written by a variety of people, some of who were obscure writers, while others were quite famous in both the adult and children’s literature areas. The illustrations in these magazines range from clumsy attempts at illustration to very elaborate Victorian engravings. This page is designed to provide the interested scholar with a listing of our holdings, brief information about the publishing history, examples of the title pages, and samples of the magazines'illustrations. The Elizabeth Nesbitt Room is pleased to offer this collection for research purposes to scholars from many different areas. Thus far, the collection has been used by those doing research in the area of children’s literature, illustrations for children, social history, etc. This print collection is supplemented by other ULS holdings, including Information Sciences' microfiche titles available through the Opie Collection, reference materials on the history of children's literature, and the bibliographic tools related to the study of American periodicals. Unless otherwise noted, all information about individual titles was obtained from catalog records and an examination of the physical items. Citations in the individual pages follow MLA Handbook's Endnotes and Footnotes system of documentation. |
