Sarah Margaret Hodges was born in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1911. Professor Hodges is a graduate of the Carnegie Library School with which she had a longstanding relationship. She was a Professor Emeritus of the School of Information Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh and used the school's collections for her research. Professor Hodges is responsible for the conception and development of the Elizabeth Nesbitt Room from 1976 through 1990. She continued to support this collection with her knowledge of and connections to the field of children's literature until her death in December of 2005. As an accomplished author of children's books, Professor Hodges’ numerous works include retellings of folklore and original texts.

This finding aid provides information about the materials in the Margaret Hodges Papers which are held in the Elizabeth Nesbitt Room. The collection includes correspondence, interviews, drafts, research material and many other papers related to Margaret Hodges' work as an author and scholar of children's literature.
