The John Newbery Medal was established in 1922 by the Fredrick C. Melcher family and was named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery. The medal is given for the most distinguished writing of a children's book published in the U.S. during the previous year. The Newbery Award is the first children's book award in the world. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association.
