In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his wife Coretta
Scott King and their mission of peace and brotherhood, the award is given annually to an African-American writer and an African-American illustrator of a distinguished, inspirational, and educational children's book that promotes understanding and cultural appreciation by the Coretta Scott King Committee of the American Library Association's Ethnic Multicultural Information Exchange Round Table (EMIERT).
