| This award is in honor of Mildred L. Batchelder, a former executive
director of the Association for Library Service to Children, who believed
in the importance of translating the world's best children's literature
into English so that our children could learn about different cultures.
The award was created in 1966 and is given to a United States publisher
who translates a children's book considered to be the most outstanding
of those books originally published in a foreign language in a foreign
country. From 1966 to 1978 the award was given to a book published two
years previously. Beginning in 1979 the award has been presented annually
unless the award committee believes that no book of that year is deserving.
It is awarded by the Association for Library Service to Children,
a division of the American Library Association.
