The American Sunday School Union (ASSU) was founded in 1824 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with the mission of promoting Sunday schools and their ideals of early literacy and the spiritual development of children. The ASSU was a significant publisher, and through its Sunday schools a significant provider, of books and periodicals for children, playing a large role in shaping the direction of 19th century children's literatue in America. This web site, which presents work compiled by Ellen Little, a student in the Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) program at the University of Pittsburgh, is designed to both highlight the ASSU publications available in the Elizabeth Nesbitt Room (ENR) and to serve as a springboard to other resources.
