designed for people interested in either world or regional-level
analysis, or an exploratory reconnaissance before delving into the
ArcWorld 1:3M layers for more detailed information.

Description: Released in March 1996, ArcWorld Supplement updates
some of the maps in ArcWorld 1:3M and adds several new maps. All the maps
in this newest database take advantage of the improved
data model introduced with ARC/INFO Version 7 (i.e., region and route
subclasses). This means that the Countries coverage
contains separate, easy-to-display maps for countries, states,
continents, seas, and so on. All the maps come in shapefile format.
-
Region: Land areas of the world, including the U.S.
-
Coverages/Layers: Maps consist of countries (country names, 4 sets of
codes, membership in world organizations, population, area, color code),
first-level administrative areas (states for 150 countries: name, 2 sets
of codes, country, population, area, type of are in English and local
language, color code), boundaries (political, shorelines), World
Polygons (country name and codes, administrative area name and codes,
region, continent, and land or water type), cities (city name,
administrative area and country, city status e.g. capital, population
rank and class, port ID number)
-
Projection:
-
Scale: 1:3M
-
Access: The GIS Server available in the Hillman Library GIS Lab (G7).
-
Format: Use with ArcView version 2 or higher on Windows, Mac, or UNIX; ARC/INFO Version 7 or higher.
-
Date: Country boundaries are current to July 1, 1995. The currency of
administrative areas varies by country; the most recent are to July 1,
1995. Population figures are estimated to 1994. Port information is
from the 1994 World Port Index.

Description: An electronic atlas with associated data files. Users can view
continent-level data showing everything from animal life and protected areas to
social infrastructure and economies using projects already created, or simply use
the data. Space images and photographs are also available.
-
Region: Covers the whole world at the continent level.
-
Coverages/Layers: Major directories are listed here, with sample files in parentheses.
Atmosphere (frost-free areas, preciptiation, temperature); Hydrosphere (glaciers, reservoirs,
snow cover, surface runoff); Lithosphere (earthquakes, faults, geologic structure,
volcanoes, lithospheric plates, morphologic structure); Resources (agriculture, land use,
minerals, protected areas, soils, vegetation, wildlife); Society (political structure, urban
areas, population density); Social Infrastructure (airports, power plants, industry,
pipelines, transportation).
-
Projection: Data is stored in geographic coordinates, with the exception of some
data for Antarctica, which is stored in Lambert Polar projection. The world maps use the
Robinson projection. The continental maps use the Lambert Equal-Area Azimuthal
(Equitorial) projection. (In ArcView, this projection is listed under "Projections of a
Hemisphere".) See help files for more information.
-
Scale: Europe is at 1:10,000,000; North and South America, Africa and
Antarctica at 1:20,000,000; and Asia and Australia at 1:25,000,000.
-
Access: Available from the server via computers in the Hillman GIS Lab.
Look for the ArcAtlas
subdirectory in the International directory.
-
Format: Ready to use in ArcView.
-
Date: Data sources and currency varies by map subject. Data sources,
compilation methods, and references are documented in the atlas text.
