The Korean collection at the University of Pittsburgh is comparatively new, but growing vigorously in recent years, especially with supplemental acquisition budget support from the Asian Studies Center. As of June 2010, the collection ranks the 19th among all Korean collections in North America, with a holding of over 12,800 volumes of Korean monographs, 110 titles of current Korean periodicals, 70 CD-ROMs, and 800 media resources. The collection is strong in core reference materials of Korean studies, Korean economics and politics, history, literature, language, religion, etc.
In addition, the Korean document delivery service provides PITT-affiliated users with Korean academic publications not held by or available from libraries in the United States. Please visit the East Asian Gateway Service for more details.
In support of faculty's study on North Korean politics and economics, a special effort has been made to acquire North Korean publications through various channels, including the gift and exchange program with Yanbian University in Yanji City, China, and the special acquisition funding from the Asian Studies Center. So far 82 titles and 2,014 issues of North Korean periodicals have been added to the collection. In addition, over 400 volumes of North Korean historical materials and school textbooks have been acquired, along with 88 VHS of feature films and over 130 DVDs of North Korean musics, dancing, feature films, and documentaries depicting various aspects of North Korean contemporary life and society.
