Guide to Starting a New Chinese Collection
Introduction
With the rapid growth and development of Chinese Studies programs in American universities and colleges, more and more schools feel the pressing need for collecting books and journals in the original Chinese language, and providing faculty and students with essential reference tools, primary sources, and archival materials in the original Chinese language, so that researchers are able to do in-depth research and studies on topics relating to China's traditional cultures as well as present social, political, and economic conditions. This guide is made with this purpose in mind, and is meant to serve as a starting point for those institutions that are starting a Chinese collection from scratch.
We welcome your suggestions and feedbacks. Please contact the Public Services Librarian if you have any questions.
Key Reference Titles
A collection of essential reference materials is the basis for any Chinese collection, regardless of its size and history. For key reference titles for Chinese studies, please refer to the Basic Reference Guide compiled by Haihui Zhang, the Chinese Bibliographer at the East Asian Library, University of Pittsburgh.
Acquisition Channel
After you have a list of Chinese books to collect, you will need to know where and from whom to acquire them. Please click here for a PDF list of major vendors in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the Unied States for Chinese printed resources and videos/audio materials.
