Labor Legacy Project

The Labor Legacy Web site constitutes a pilot project to “map” the historical terrain of the labor movement in Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania for the use of both the academic and general public.  The site debuted in 1999, under the direction of Dr. David L. Rosenberg, Archivist, UE/Labor Archives, and thanks to the dedicated work of John P. Montoya, University of Pittsburgh, Class of 2002.  The project was centered in the Archives Service Center of the University Library System.

Developing Labor Legacy enabled us to provide far greater access to important historical materials than is otherwise possible.  At the same time, the increased visibility has resulted in researchers visiting the Archives Service Center to more fully examine our collections.  Their visits enabled us to learn more about current research interests and how we might better respond to those needs.  In order to address some of this feedback, we concluded the pilot project in 2003.  We are now further exploring user input and considering technical improvements so that we can offer a truly sustainable and scalable resource.

We are very grateful for the support that we received from labor organizations, private foundations, and individuals to develop the initial Labor Legacy Web site.  We also offer thanks to those who continue to share their thoughts and ideas about its future.
