GERONTOLOGY CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

GIMBEL PENNSYLVANIA ART COLLECTION

The exhibition of the Gimbel Pa. Art Collection, that part of which consisted primarily of works dealing with Western Pennsylvania and which was given to the University of Pittsburgh in 1959 by Gimbel Brothers, Inc., was mounted in recognition of the University of Pittsburgh’s Bicentennial in 1987.

In 1946, Gimbel Brothers, Inc., commissioned a group of American artists to create an art collection of 115 works in oil, tempera, watercolor and charcoal. In 1959, 48 paintings which depicted the city of Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania were given to the University of Pittsburgh. After an inaugural exhibition of the paintings in March, 1959 in the Student Union, the paintings were placed, at various times, in buildings, on the Oakland, Johnstown, and Greensburg campuses. The 1986/87 exhibition reassembled the collection from the various campuses for display at the Westmoreland Museum of Art and the University Gallery of the University of Pittsburgh.

"Established in fall 2009 the Green Scholar Program selects the best and brightest students in each of three academic divisions to work collaboratively with faculty doing research. ROSE TROPHY Inaugurated in 2004. The Rose Trophy is an all-sports trophy that will travel between the two campuses of UPG and UPBradford. The "host" of the trophy will be determined by the winner of the overall sports competition between the two Universities. The trophy is named for Dr. M. Richard Rose who, as an assistant to the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Pittsburgh, had the responsibility for the academic and physical creation of three of the University's regional campuses, including Pitt-Greensburg, Pitt-Bradford and Pitt-Titusville.
