The Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education is the leading typology of American colleges and universities. It is the framework in which institutional diversity in U.S. higher education is commonly described.
The Classification "universe" is defined as all U.S. colleges and universities that are degree-granting and accredited by the U.S. Secretary of Education. Operationally, the universe is defined as those institutions listed in the annual Higher Education Directory, published by Higher Education Publications, Inc.
