Description:

African American Song is designed to document the history of African American music by providing full length, streaming music files.

This release holds some 16,000 tracks of historical recordings from Document Records featuring music from the first half of the 20th century. It is searchable by several means, including artist, instrument,or album.

While the collection covers a range of genres, it features a proportionally large amount of blues recordings as well as approximately 3,500 songs under the classification "sacred" music. Other genres include American folk, jazz, ragtime, spoken words and sounds, and stage and screen.

Users can create playlists and link to an online store of the materials. Educators have options to create tests and further organize material for use in coursework.
