The ULS proactively identifies and evaluates resources for conversion into electronic format to be hosted and served by the ULS. We are engaged in many diverse publishing initiatives as represented by the list below.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

All University of Pittsburgh students completing a theses or dissertation to meet graduation requirements must submit an electronic version of their work. Search available ETDs or visit the University's main ETD site for additional information.

Electronic Journals

In addition to subscribing to tens of thousands of electronic journals, the ULS is collaborating with various socities and associations to digitize and make available in electronic format their journals and proceedings.

Cleft Palate Journal: As a service to the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association (ACPA), the Digital Research Library now provides retrospective access to issues of The Cleft Palate Journal published between 1964 and 1989.

 

Pre-Print and 'Grey Literature' Archives

Using author self-archiving software, these subject-based Archives allow scholars around the world to submit materials directly via the Web.

The Aphasiology Archive: An archive of papers presented at the Conference on Clinical Aphasiology.

Archive of European Integration : An electronic archive for publications on European integration, including key official European Union documents.

Minority Health Archive : A repository for documents pertaining to minority health issues.

PhilSci Archive: An electronic archive for preprints in the philosophy of science.

Image Collections

Photographs of over one hundred years of Pittsburgh history have been captured by leading photographers, family members, and in the course of work.  The images in this set of online collections document the changing cityscape, people, and industry of the region as well as the University of Pittsburgh.  Historical moments of the city's past are highlighted  and searchable through the site and all images are downloadable.

 

Chartres: Cathedral of Notre-Dame: Comprehensive collection of images visually documenting the architecture, sculpture, and stained glass of this "High Gothic" cathedral in France.

Historic Pittsburgh Image Collections: Collection of thousands of images that document the history of the Pittsburgh and western Pennsylvania region from dozens of collections from multiple local repositories.

Jack B. Yeats Broadsheets Collection: Jack Yeats, the younger brother of  poet William Butler Yeats, became one of Ireland's major artists in the early twentieth century.  Yates collaborated with another artist, Pamela Colman Smith, and a small publisher and friend, Elkin Mathews, to produce broadsheets containing hand colored prints with accompanying texts. This collection of colorful broadsheets commemorates each month of 1902.

Lillian Friedberg Postcard Collection: A selection of postcards from the Lillian Friedberg Papers document various themes both before and during World War II.  Postcards of the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair, depict a world full of promise and prosperity, despite being created during the nation’s worst depression. The later postcards, all pertaining to World War II, tell a much different story through propaganda generated by the British Royal Air Force, French Resistance, and the Nazi regime.

Stalinka: Hundreds of visuals of images of Joseph Stalin useful for the study and research of the Soviet leader.

UPG Visual History: Images of the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg campus from the 1920s up to the present.

Vézelay: Images of the Benedictine abbey church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine in Burgundy .

Visuals for Foreign Language Instruction : Visual aids (illustrations) designed to support instructional tasks, such as describing objects and people or describing events and situations.

Textual Collections

Textual collections consist of primarily of historical monographs, serials, manuscripts, pamphlets, etc. that can be viewed and searched by keyword. Some of these collections include other type of material.

19th Century Schoolbooks: A full-text collection of 140 books and a catalog of the Nietz Old Textbook Collection maintained by the ULS Special Collections department.

A.E. Forbes Communist Collection:

Through hand rendered and mimeographed broadsides, newsletters, and flyers, this online collection of documents presents a local snapshot of Pittsburgh's radical politics within the context of the

Communist Party.

American Left Ephemera Collection: A wide-range of primary source material that documents left-wing organizations in the twentieth century in the U.S. (also includes visual images).

Dick Thornburgh Papers: The Dick Thornburgh Papers digital collection includes an extensive online guide to the personal papers documenting the life and career of Pennsylvania's 44th Governor (1979-1987) and Attorney General of the United States (1988-1991).  The site is fully searchable and includes a selection of downloadable audio-visual material as well as over 40,000 textual documents.

Documenting PITT: A set of key materials that reflect portions of the university’s documented history. More than 70,000 pages of text are searchable or browsable along with hundreds of images that visually depict some of the many people and buildings that comprise Pitt.

 

George Washington Manuscripts: The first shots of the French and Indian War were fired in western Pennsylvania in 1754. They came from troops under the command of a young officer by the name of George Washington. In commemorating the 250th anniversary of the conflict, the University Library System brings together selected manuscripts from its collections documenting Washington's long career and association with our region.

Historic Pittsburgh: Historic Pittsburgh is a comprehensive collection of local resources that supports personal and scholarly research of the western Pennsylvania area. This Web site enables access to historic material held by the University of Pittsburgh's University Library System, the Library & Archives of the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania at the Heinz History Center, Carnegie Museum of Art, and Chatham College Archives.

 

Parallax Project: Ten-volume set of the Publications of the Allegheny Observatory of the University of Pittsburgh contains tables of data, reports on methodology of astronomical observations, presentations of new modes of calculation of star positions, and descriptions of observational instrumentation.

Pittsburgh and Beyond: The Experience of the Jewish Community. A Guide to the NCJW Pittsburgh Section Oral History Collection.

Stephen Foster's Sketchbook: Drafts of sixty-four songs, including "Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair" and "My Old Kentucky Home," penned by Pittsburgh-born composer Stephen Foster.
